SOLID FLOOR INSTALLATION
Solid floors can be laid in several different ways depending on how much room you have between the sub floor and the finished timber level.
1. THE BEST WAY.
Lay and fix the battens at 400mm (16 inch) centres accross the shortest span of the room and on top of this lay a role of polythene. Lay sheets of code 3 OSB board on top and screw them down to the battens. On top of this lay the floor running the longest span spaceing nails out at 400mm (16 inch) centres.
The OSB is an extra for three good reasons. Firstly it will support the timber at every joint so the number of joints dosen't matter and the floor is far less lightly to squeak as it settles. Secondly it stops the echo coming from the concrete as you walk on it so the floor is much quieter and finely of course you'll have far less waste as you won't have to cut ends of the boards so they meet on battens.
2. STANDARD WAY
Lay a role of polythene on the concrete and than lay and fix the battens on top at 400mm (16 inch) centres accross the shortest span of the room. On top of this lay the floor running the longest span spaceing nails out at 400mm (16 inch) centres.
3. STUCK FOR HEIGHT
Get 18mm plywood cut into 50mm strips and lay and fix these as the battens. Plywood will hold the nails better than timber and are just big enough for secret nailing. On top of this lay and fix the floor running the longest span spaceing nails out at 400mm (16 inch) centres.
4. STILL NOT ENOUGH HEIGHT
